Pure Bicarbonate of Soda, otherwise known as Baking Soda

Australia and the United Kingdom refer to Baking Soda as Bicarbonate of Soda therefore Baking Soda is pure Sodium Bicarbonate

This product is aluminum free. In the mining process, water is used to extract the sodium bicarbonate and no chemicals are used. A closed loop process leaves the community and its surrounding virtually untouched. Some other companies chemically produce their baking soda by creating a chemical reaction between soda ash and carbon dioxide.

What is the difference between baking powder, baking soda and bicarbonate of soda?

Baking soda and bicarbonate of soda are different names for the same thing; in Australia, we mostly refer to it as bicarbonate of soda, but overseas, especially in America, it is referred to as baking soda. They aren’t interchangeable, but bicarbonate of soda and baking powder are both leavening agents. When included in a batter, the leavening agent causes air bubbles (produced by stirring, whipping or beating) to expand when cooked – causing it to ‘rise’.

Bicarbonate of soda is a pure leavening agent. It needs to be mixed with moisture and an acidic ingredient for the necessary chemical reaction to take place to make food rise. Because it needs an acid to create the rising quality, it is often used in recipes where there is already an acidic ingredient present, such as lemon juice, cocoa, yoghurt or honey.

Baking powder, contains bicarbonate of soda in it but also comes pre-mixed with other acidic ingredient like cream of tartar. Baking powder has a neutral taste and is often used in recipes that have other neutral-tasting ingredients, such as milk. Baking Powder contains aluminium and should be avoided.

Bicarbonate of soda imparts a slightly different quality to that of baking powder when used in cooking. It can have a slightly “tangy” taste and it makes a lovely golden colour. It also makes a very specific texture not achievable with baking powder. It is necessary to use very exact measures as the “tangy” taste can quite easily become bitter or soapy if too much is used.

Uses for Bicarbonate of Soda

  1. Help you become more alkaline. Simply mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to a large glass of water, and consume this mix after every main meal .
  2. Heat Rash, Sunburn, Skin conditions. Add ½ cups or more of Bicarbonate of Soda to your bath water. This also helps to smooth and soften skin and can be very relaxing.
  3. Insect bites and rashes: to relieve discomfort. Make a paste with water.
  4. Brush your teeth and whiten them. Wet your brush with olive oil and dip it into the dry Bi-carb and brush.
  5. Deodorant.Combine ½ cup of bicarbonate of soda with ½ cup of corn starch and add a few mint leaves. Shake and pour into a container with a lid. To use: apply with dry washcloth & dust on. Alternately reuse an empty spice jar and sprinkle onto damp armpit. For unscented deodorant, omit the mint leaves.
  6. Household Cleaning. Simply use as a deodoriser and cleaner around the home.
  7. Baking.

The following recipe works wonders for washing your hair.

1. Use an old shampoo bottle (well-rinsed) Mix 1 part aluminum-free baking soda to 3 parts Water. Each time you use this solution, be sure to shake the mixture well.

2. Squeeze the baking soda solution onto your dry scalp, then massage your scalp for several seconds.

3. Leave in for 1-3 minutes, and rinse completely.

4. In an old shampoo bottle (well-rinsed), mix 1 part Apple cider vinegar or White Vinegar if you find the smell a little strong to 4 parts Water. Essential oils or herbs are optional (such as 1 cinnamon stick or 1 vanilla pod which will last through several bottles of mixture. You could also add 1/2 teaspon of vanilla essence). The aim is to masks the vinegar smell, and leaves your hair smelling nice, although the general rule states that the vinegar smell will dissipate when the hair is dry.

5. Leave on hair for several seconds, then rinse.
