GAPS Legal Steps for Managing Constipation

If you are following the introduction stages, you should move through the Introduction Diet stages 1 & 2 faster (a day or two each) if you are constipated and then follow the GAPS legal steps below to manage constipation.

  • The first and foremost important intervention for constipation is an Enema.It is very important to make sure bowels move every 36 hours or it will contribute to the toxic load in the body.Enemas assist to relieve the toxins built up in the colon caused by constipation.
  • Increase sauerkraut juice and introduce other fermented vegetable juices such as Beet Kvass (start with small amounts at a level you can manage to control the die off reaction).
  • Replace high-protein dairy (whey, yoghurt, kefir and cheese) with high-fat dairy (ghee, butter and sour cream), because high protein dairy can aggravate constipation. (sour cream is made the same as yoghurt or kefir, only with cream instead of milk). The high fat content of sour cream will assist to lubricate the gut wall and soften the stool. (Avoid butter if you have not introduced it yet)
  • If constipation persists, introduce freshly pressed juices earlier on in the diet from stage 2.Start with carrot juice diluted in water and increase the strength gradually.The juice will stimulate bile production as many cases of persistent constipation are due to poor bile production. When there is not enough bile, the fats in the food do not digest well; instead they react with salts and form soap in the gut, causing constipation.When you have successfully introduced juice, you may use high-magnesium fruit and vegetables, such as oranges, celery, apples, carrots, cabbage, beetroot and greens and add 1 – 2 egg yolks with a dollop of sour cream.Mix in a blender and serve as a breakfast smoothie.(Avoid fruit if Candida is an issue)
  • Increase Fermented Cod Liver oil till you are taking the therapeutic dose and take this at the same time as the juicing.
  • You can start introducing olive oil earlier in stage 2 and increase other fish oils if tolerated.
  • Rub Caster oil on the belly and apply heat with a water bottle to manage faecal compaction.
  • Belly massage that gently stimulates the colon aids digestion and helps relieve constipation.
  • Increase your vegetable fibre with more avocado, cooked cabbage, beetroot, Brussels sprouts celery, spinach and kale.
  • Choose gelatinous meats, and reduce muscle meats in your diet.
  • Drink plenty of water in between meals.
  • Consume more animal fats.Dietary fat initiates the action that precedes bowel movements.
  • It is important to emphasise again, that if constipation continues to persist make sure you conduct an enema every night.
